I just ran across this crazy cool video of Kris Allen, this year’s winner of American Idol, Singing “God of this City” at the church where he was a worship leader – New Life Church!
Super cool in my book.
We need to pray for Kris, that he would use this new platform he has to bring glory to God, protection for his marriage, and not to get “caught up” in the whirlwind that is about to surround his life.
Also we should give give thinks to our great God for what He is doing, and has done in Kris’s life!
{p.s. – if you can’t tell – I’m super glad Kris won! – you can follow Kris on his twitter page!}
Thanks for posting this Rick. Super excited that Kris won, but let's not forget to lift up Adam Lambert as well. There truly is no one like our God!
Indeed – we need to remember to pray for Adam also. – thanks for the reminder!
Definitely. How did you come across this video pastor rick?
Thanks for sharing. That was absolutely beautiful.
It's legit! Like I said we need to keep him, and his family in our prayers!
Kris is an amazing worship leader. Couldn't stand though how "the church" was rallying behind him for votes only because he was a "christian". I personally felt like Adam Lambert's singing ability surpassed that of Kris, but in the end, Kris was probably a better fit as the poster boy for American Idol.
The church supports him now, but if anything, pray that the church doesn't cut him off at the knees the minute he slips up or does something that they don't like. They've proven to do this time and time again with other artists who were "christians". Remember that Kris won "American Idol" not "Christian Music Artist Idol".
Good video though. thanks for posting.
well, Hector, YES, I supported Kris BECAUSE he was a Christian. When it came down to Kris and Adam, I wouldn't have cared if all Kris could do was mooo! out of key!! I would STILL rather him as American Idol Winner over a flaming homosexual. (don't believe that Adam is? just google his name in images)
no, seriously, google Adam's name in images. you will find pictures of him IN DRAG, tongue kissing other guys. I'm not "judging" him because he wears make-up or sings in a high register. the pictures don't lie. I'm sure Adam is a nice guy, but sin is sin. we in this country are being slowly boiled to accept homosexuality. I'm judging him based on public record. there are also all kind of blogs out there that confirm he is a homosexual. you are right. we ALL need God's grace, including Adam, and I do pray for him. but on the "judging" thing, it's not judging if it's true. for example, if i saw on the news that a man killed another man, and I said, he is a murderer. is that judging the man? no, it's stating the truth. and I really don't mean to argue with you, i hope I'm not coming off that way. I've just heard so many Christians during this season of American Idol that said things like, I hope Adam wins, he is so good, or so good looking or whatever. and I'm saying, WHY would you want America to put a stamp of approval on his lifestyle, because like it or not, that's exactly what it would be seen as by homosexual groups? again, I would have voted for Kris over Adam, knowing Kris is a Christian, even if Kris sat there and banged the floor with sticks and drooled.
Thanks for the feedback, I don't think you are arguing with me at all – I enjoy dialouge!
Although winning a show like this is a cool thing to do – I"m not sure that winning a reality contest equals America giving that person a "stamp of approval" on their lifestyle. Again, do you google your dentist, doctor, car repair person, person who cuts your hair, all your teachers, etc, to try to find out what sort of history you can on them? I don't. I just use who does the best job, to me their faith doesn't tell me anything about how well they can drill my teeth. It doesn't have anything to do with faith. I would say the same for American Idol. The Christian tv network where I live (Dallas) ran a show a while back that was basically the Christian American Idol. Now that's a different deal, because that means you don't just sing Chris Tomlin songs well – it means that you act like Christ. It's much deeper then just your ability to sing. I would say that American Idol isn't. The only requirement I would look for beyond their ability to sing is are they American? (but I'm trusting the producers to do that for – so I don't check into it.)
Not sure if that point is coming across the right way, or not. Hope it is! It's late and past my bedtime!
Again, thanks for the feedback!
Hey Rick! Have you read this article?
I love how Kris was not "churchy" and was totally aware of the "Christian stamp" or "vote." He definitely succeeded in third space influence! That is a total WIN for the Kingdom of God…
http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/TV/05/23/larry.ki...
Thanks for posting that link, I hadn't read it yet!
I also believe it was a win for the Kingdom! Like I said in the post, we need to now pray for Kris, his family, and for The Holy Spirit to work in Him, and through him!
Rick summed it up perfectly, so no need to expound much on this. This was a singing contest and that's it. I don't need to see pictures of Lambert in drag to know he was a great singer. And if you choose to vote for someone that can't sing but is a master cow sound maker (not saying that Kris was a bad singer, just commenting on your mooing comment), i guess that just shows how shallow you probably are. Do you know any gay people? Are you friends with any? Are you being a light to their world or do you choose not to associate with them because they're "sinners" and unworthy of your presence?
itsme makes a few legit points, but for the most part what he's saying is a stinky pile of poo.
Here's the real deal. Adam Lambert and Kris Allen both have the same problem, and so do you and I. Sin. It's true. Adam's 'flaming homosexuality' is no worse than the little white lie Kris told when he said that he understood what Paula was trying to say.
Also, I'm fairly sure that our slow boil to the acceptance of homosexuality pales in comparison to the fact that we can now use 'God' and 'American Idol' in the same sentence as though they go together like beer and burps.
Third space influence? A WIN for the Kingdom?
Wow. I dare you to expound on that.
You have no idea what you're saying. Totally asinine.
Thanks for your feedback. As a believer I think it is awesome that the winner of the show as a believer as well, but I view it as just an added bonus if you will. Like Hector said, this contest isn't "Christian American Idol" – it is simply American Idol – a singing contest. I'm not sure Kris's faith should have anything to do with him winning or loosing this contest. It's a singing contest, not a Christian contest. I think it should be looked at sort of as a bonus.
For example – A few months ago I had to find a new dentist. I asked around, looked in the phone book, and picked one. When I went I found out he was a believer – BONUS. I was looking for a dentist who could do good work, not someone to have a Bible study with – so the fact he happened to be also be a believer was simply a bonus. – If that makes sense.
Don't get me wrong – I am super happy for Kris, but I think we need to be very careful of how we treat other people. You call Adam a "flaming homosexual" but have you ever sat down and talked with Adam? Do you know (100%) what is life style is like? These are the sorts of things that cause non-believers to think what they think about us. That we judge everyone, and everything. I'm glad people don't point out every single thing I do all day long that is not Christ-like. I am in such need of God's grace every day. I know myself far to well, and know where I'd be with out it.
I think what we should do is pray for both of these men, and ask God to work in their life. We are are in needs of God's great grace…..
Again, thanks for your feedback!
I'm not really sure what "3rd space influence" means, but in regard to me saying I agree that it is a "win for the Kingdom;" I think any time someone that is a believer wins something "worldly" like this it shows the world that Christians aren't as "lame" as the world thinks. That we do have talent, we are on "par" with the world as far as talent is concerned. We don't all just sit at home on Friday nights and play board games, but we are relevant, and we can compete with the world in talent, because it is God that gives us all talent.
I say it is a win, because now Kris has much more influence then he did 5 months ago. The world is watching him MUCH closer now. I think any believer in the same spot as Kris would be asking God to allow him to use his new platform to scream out to an unbelieving world the power, and grace of God.
Not that that is a requirement to winning the contest (I'll be honest, I listen to Kelly Clarkson, I like her music, but I have no idea if she has a relationship with God through Christ.), but the fact that he won, and happens to also have a relationship with God is an awesome bonus – and a huge win for the Kingdom!
(hope that makes some sort of sense)
Thanks, Jer, for your response to my reply…
Asinine?
Influence can exist on many different levels… a good example of "3rd space influence" (coined by Erwin McManus) would be Blake Mycoskie, founder of tomsshoes. He did not go into the marketplace to "counter culture" – he made, designed, and marketed shoes to give to those in need. He began to gain influence, made a difference, and he is a Christian. Authentically Christian.
Influence can exist within our "Church Bubble" but when does it go into the world, the marketplace, to the people in need of Christ? He didn't make shoes that said "Tommy Hellfighter" or something that is a churchy spin on a brand, he uses his creativity to create a new brand… and now Blake is reaching the world with his story and his shoe giving awesomeness.
As far as Kris Allen, I think it is a WIN because he shows love toward Adam, despite his sexual preference. He lives out God's love in every interview and does it with humility. He has gained influence in the world with media and uses his gifts… that is awesome. We are all called to do this… love God and love His people.
Thanks for the dare, but I am curious- how much influence do you have?
Here is a little bit of explanation of 3 space:
Acts 17 :: Three Spaces
Space 1 :: Paul went to the space he was most comfortable. "Most of our churches are a reaffirmation of ourselves. Most don't even have room for our own children, we want people who fully agree with us and thus belong"
The church: create a first space. A space the world cannot provide, a space where everyone does not have to agree but where everyone belongs.
Space 2 :: Paul went to the marketplace. The place of ideas and the place of interaction outside the church. It's worth noting, if the church cannot communicate well on a Sunday, how can church members translate it on Monday… in their 'marketplace'…
Space 3 :: In the third space, the church and it's people are invited by the un-churched into their world. "They took him…" It's a space the church cannot influence unless it's invited into… "when you do anything great, you can say anything you want… what can the church do for the community to be asked into the third space…?"
Does this make sense? Would you like me to expound a little more?
I don't care anything for American Idol, but awesome to see he won and will be praying he stays strong to display the power God has in peoples lives!
Interesting Comments.
This weekend in the bedroom next to mine my Father in Law died.
It really puts into perspective at what petty things some people want to believe and or argue about. Rick I totally respect how you handle yourself with your commenters. I enjoy your blog, tweets and Double Popped interviews.
As far as "not judging" Adam. I think that if Jesus was walking the earth now. It would be Adam's house that he would go to and have a meal and teach. Remember itsme,
Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” – Matthew 9:10-13 (New King James Version)
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned what I felt was the main reason Kris won, Adam just freaked everyone out. He screamed through every song and looked like he came straight out of some weird horror flick. Adam definitely has talent, but he wasn't contemporary. He fit in with KISS and Slash, but by the end of every song he was screaming like he was in a 80's hair band singing in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I really don't think the fact that Kris is a Christian helped him win. In fact, almost everyone I have talked to didn't even know that Kris was a worship leader. I think he appealed more to the tween and teen girls that text, and he was able to pull off contemporary songs. He was talented and humble, and I think it was great that he represented Christ without making a big deal about it.
One last thing, I think we are being naive, if we think that Adam's lifestyle didn't play into the vote. Yes, I know that we are all sinners saved by grace, but if Adam had won the competition, I guarantee that his sexual preference would have played a major role in all the headlines about his victory. Winning the competition gives you a soapbox, and I am just thankful that it turned out the way it did. God is in control, and we can't forgot that.
Amen to your "One Last Thing". I couldn't agree with you more.
I may not have reflected that in my above comment. I just believe that sometimes in our non-"judging" mentality we become the biggest judgers of them all. (Not referring to your comment).
We all need to figure out how to Love ALL People.
We gotta get you into American Idol! (or on it!)
I'm sorry to hear about your Father in law, I pray you are drawing close to the Lord and being a source of encouragement to your family!
Thanks for the kind words about my blog remarks, I try to respond in grace, and truth, so thank you!
And what a great truth – that Jesus wanted to hang out with "guys like us" Humbles me everyday. I'm so thankful that He found me, and He wanted me, when no one else did! What a great God we serve!
My sweet, loving, wife said this after Kris won –
"No one wants to hear Adam screaming in their ear."
hahah
She's so sweet!
